In a world where wit is a weapon but also a mask, comedy transpires...
Successful author Charles Condomine and his wife Ruth invite spiritualist Madame Arcati for a séance as research for Charles' new book. The novelty of this midsummer's diversion has unexpected results when Charles' former wife Elvira appears with a seductively supernatural agenda. A highly comedic battle of wits plays out in this ethereal and corporeal love triangle. In the end, truths are unmasked and mystery is unraveled as Charles and Arcati lift the spirits from limbo to levity.
